Since the junta seized power in coup on February 1st, citizens in Myanmar took to the streets. Under the name of rigged election, the military established a dictatorship. By organizing anti-junta protests across the country, people in Myanmar are resisting against dictatorship. The regime in the country commits violence to quell protests. The protests in Myanmar and the military coup remind South Koreans of the pro-democracy movements in the second half of the 1900s.

After the Korean war, strongmen took power in South Korea. Like Myanmar in 2021, South Koreans have fought against strongmen from in the 1960s to the…

In 2013, Kimchi was recommended for UNESCO list. And, Kimjang, the South Korean culture that makes and shares Kimchi, was added to the UNESCO list, suggesting that both Kimchi and Kimjang are from Korea. But, in 2021, Korea and China are disputing over the origin of Kimchi. China’s thinly-veiled attempt to steal Korea’s traditional food is to blame.

Chinese netizens have recently started to claim that Kimchi is Chinese traditional food, not Korean food. They assert that Pao cai, Chinese pickled vegetable dish, is the origin of Kimchi. Koreans, as China claims, made Kimchi in Joseon Dynasty, while trying to…

An old woman started to take care of an 8-day-old baby girl, named Jung-in. The foster mother, who’ve taken care of orphaned babies over 15 years, raised Jung-in for 7 months, until when the girl was adopted by a couple, who claimed themselves as devoted Christians, raising a 4 year-old girl. The couple said that they prayed for Jung-in, hoping that they could adopt the lovely baby. Then, Jung-in was adopted by the couple. After the adoption, the family appeared on a TV show, which introduced a textbook case of a happy family.

But, were they a really happy family…

Since a murder at a toilet around Gangnam Station in Seoul, misogyny has become a hot potato in South Korea. A man in his 30s killed a woman in her 20s. The murderer said that his crime was motivated by the hatred of women, assuming that most women belittled him. The crime fueled the rise of feminism in Korea, while some men, imbued with misandry, demonized women on the internet. Women have organized demonstrations, speaking up for misogyny, calling for the society to respect women’s rights.

Sadly, even with women’s efforts to tackle the chronic misogyny issue, it is still…

In Korea’s history, August 29, 1910 is the most painful day. Joseon dynasty, the then Korea, was annexed to Japan. For 36 years, Korea had been under the colonial rule of Japan. 75 years passed from independence, yet Koreans never forgive Japan’s atrocities during the colonial era. What makes Koreans still express anger over Japan’s past misdeeds?

Many Koreans severely criticize Japan for its “I-don’t-care” attitude towards its history. Japan denies its atrocities, including wartime crimes, that victimized hundreds of thousands of Koreans. …

The massive demonstration on August 15th, led by Jun Kwang-hoon, a far right-wing pastor, prompted South Korea to witness the surge of Covid-19. He organized the protest in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, to call for the impeachment of Moon Jae-in, the left-leaning president of South Korea. Thousands of self-proclaimed Christians from Sarang Cheil Church, a church led by Jun, and far right-wing figures attended the demonstration.

Jun participated in the demonstration, even though the Seoul City official has ordered him to be quarantined due to the Covid-19. Couple of days after the demonstration, he tested positive. Moreover, Jun didn’t wear a face…

When the Covid-19 has hit the world, the governments have paid their attention to South Korea for its prompt response to contain the virus. South Korea’s confirmed cases and death toll is far lower than America and most European countries. Many countries have sought help to Korea, importing test kits from the country. But Korea, which seemed successfully fighting against pandemic, is now seeing the surge of new coronavirus cases. The country tightened social distancing again. Jun Kwang-hoon, a populist pastor, and Sarang Cheil church, an evangelical church led by Jun, is to blame.

In South Korea, Jun Kwang-hoon, the…

A high school in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi province, South Korea is famous for its students’ graduation photo album. Students parodize celebrities, from popular characters of Korean soap operas to the global sport stars, to celebrate their high school graduation. But, the school’s graduation photo album has recently provoked a controversy over racism.

A group of students parodized funerals in Ghana, which have a tradition of dancing pallbearers. But, students who paradized dancing pallbearers darkened their faces when taking their graduation photo. …

For recent years, “digital sex crimes”, a series of crimes committed by using digital devices, have become pervasive. Among many cases, one of the worst crimes were the so-called “Nth room case”, that shocked Koreans by the end of March, 2020.

It’s a series of sex crimes that dozens of men threatened women — mostly teenage girls — to sexually enslave them. The offenders coerced survivors into having sex with them, distributing photos of their naked bodies on Telegram chatting rooms in return for Monero, a cryptocurrency that ensures anonymity of traders.

Citizens were incensed by the disgusting crimes, calling…

The world is hit by the COVID-19. Many countries have locked down their borders, declaring curfew to fight against the virus. The global economy has fallen for last several months due to the pandemic. Amid the spread of coronavirus, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics failed to catch the world’s attention. With the outbreak of coronavirus, the International Olympic Committee(IOC) postponed the Tokyo games by a year.

Last month, the IOC and Japan decided to hold the Olympics and Paralympics in a simplified manner. …
